How many 500 × 500 mm pieces can you cut from a 2440 × 1220 mm sheet?

You can cut 8 pieces of 500 × 500 mm from one 2440 × 1220 mm sheet with a 3 mm saw kerf and rotation allowed — 67% of the sheet ends up in parts.

The layout is a straight grid, 2 across and 4 along the length. 67% is middling — 33% of the sheet is left over, so it pays to nest these together with other parts.

Kerf and grain

The 3 mm kerf doesn't cost a part here: 8 fit with or without it. There's still 214 × 2440 mm left over after the last cut.

Squares don't care about rotation, so grain direction is free: lay every piece with the grain running the 2440 mm length and the count stays at 8.

How many 2440 × 1220 mm sheets do I need for 25 pieces at 500 × 500 mm?

How this was worked out

EZNESTING's nesting engine (the same one the optimizer runs, in its default least-waste guillotine mode) was given more 500 × 500 mm parts than could possibly fit on one 1220 × 2440 mm sheet, with a 3 mm kerf between parts and none at the factory edges. The parts it placed are the answer. That count is checked against simple grid layouts in both orientations (best of those: 8), so the page never shows less than a straight grid would give. No edge trim is assumed; if you skim 5 mm off a factory edge, re-run it in the optimizer with trim set.
