Sheet Goods Calculator: How Many Sheets Do I Need?
You're standing in the home center aisle with a sketch and a Sharpie, trying to do the math in your head. The 4×8 sheet of birch ply is $68. Buying one too many is $68 you didn't need. Buying one too few is a second trip and a project on hold.

Standard sheet sizes you will encounter
Most home center plywood, MDF, and melamine comes in:
- 4×8 (48" × 96") — the most common, fits in a pickup with the gate down
- 5×5 (60" × 60") — Baltic birch and some specialty stock
- 5×8 (60" × 96") — closet specialty melamine
- 5×10 (60" × 120") — kitchen-grade plywood at cabinet shops
- 4×10 (48" × 120") — long sheet for built-ins and signage

Worked example: bathroom vanity from one sheet
A 36"-wide bathroom vanity with a single drawer and a door:
- 2 sides @ 21" × 30" (cabinet sides)
- 1 bottom @ 21" × 33"
- 1 top @ 21" × 33"
- 1 shelf @ 21" × 33"
- 1 back @ 33" × 30" (1/4" stock — separate sheet)
- 1 door @ 16" × 25"
- 1 drawer front @ 16" × 6"
The 3/4" parts (everything except the back) need about 22 sq ft of sheet material. A 4×8 has 32 sq ft. One sheet, with usable offcut around 10 sq ft left over for shop scraps or another small project.

How much waste should you expect?
Realistic utilization on a typical cabinet job is 85-92%. The optimizer aims higher in theory, but real-world factors knock it down:

- Grain direction locks on visible faces cost 3-5%

DIY vs pro: when to upgrade your tools
