4x8 Plywood Cut Calculator — Fit Your Parts, Count Your Sheets
A 4x8 sheet is 48" × 96" — 32 square feet — and it's the unit almost every plywood, OSB, and MDF project is bought in. This calculator takes your parts list and arranges it on 48×96 sheets: it tells you exactly how many sheets to buy, draws the cutting diagram for each one, subtracts the saw kerf, and respects grain direction. The 4x8 sheet, precisely
The entity facts, since "4x8" hides some traps:
- Face dimensions: 48" × 96" (1220 × 2440 mm is the metric sibling — close, not identical)
- Area: 32 sq ft per sheet
- Thickness runs under nominal: "¾ inch" plywood is actually 23/32" (18 mm ≈ 45/64"); "½ inch" is 15/32". Dados and rabbets care even when cut layout doesn't
- Face grain runs the 96" way on standard sheets — parts that need grain along their length must sit lengthwise on the sheet
- Common variants: 4x4 and 2x4 handy panels, 4x10 and 4x12 sheathing, and 5x5 Baltic birch (its own layout world)
Factory edges are straight but not precious; a common practice is trimming ¼" off factory edges for glue-line rips — if you do, tell the calculator your sheet is 47½ × 95½ and the plan stays honest.
Why area math under-buys
Divide total part area by 32 and you get a sheet count that's frequently wrong in the dangerous direction. Parts are rectangles, not liquid: they have to physically fit, whole, inside 48×96 with a kerf between them.
Worked example — garage storage cabinets in ¾" ply:
- 2 sides × 24" × 72"
- 2 top/bottom × 24" × 36"
- 4 shelves × 24" × 34½"
Total area is just over 59 sq ft, and 59 ÷ 32 says 2 sheets. But lay it out: each sheet rips into two 24"-wide strips of 96". A 72" side leaves 24" on its strip — too short for a 36" top or a 34½" shelf. Packed properly (72 alone, 36+36 on one strip, shelves two-up), the job takes five strips — three sheets, with a full 24×96 strip left over as tracked offcut. Area math shorts you a sheet; the layout tells the truth and hands you the cutting diagram: crosscut order per strip, kerf included.
The reverse mistake — padding by 20% "to be safe" — costs real money at today's sheet prices. The layout replaces both guesses.
Kerf and grain, handled
Two settings make a sheet plan trustworthy:
- Kerf: a table or track saw removes ⅛" per cut. Three 16"-wide rips minus kerfs no longer come out of 48" cleanly — plans that ignore this produce parts that are each 1/16" shy. Set kerf once; it's applied to every cut in the diagram
- Grain direction: cabinet sides and doors usually need grain running their length. Lock rotation for grain-critical parts and the optimizer only places them the right way; leave shop parts (drawer bottoms, spacers) free to rotate and yield goes up

- Stock: 48 × 96 (or 47½ × 95½ if you trim factory edges), quantity as many as needed
- Parts: width × length × quantity; mark grain-locked parts
- Set kerf (⅛" typical)
- Run — you get sheet count, a cutting diagram per sheet, utilization, and every offcut
Print the diagrams for the saw, or export the shopping list. If the store is doing your first rips on the panel saw, bring the diagram — first cuts are usually free at big-box stores, and a printed plan is the difference between "cut it at 24" and hoping.
