Miter Saw Station Plans: 8 ft Plywood Cut List

An 8-foot miter saw station built from two 30" storage cabinets with a 36" saw bay between them. The wings sit at 36". The saw platform is lowered so the saw table lines up with the wings, and that depth depends on your saw, so it is the one dimension you set yourself.

Assumptions behind every number

  • 3/4" plywood measures 23/32", which is typical for US sheet goods. Parts that fit between two others subtract the actual thickness. Measure your sheet; if it differs, edit the sizes in the optimizer.
  • Every layout uses a 1/8" saw kerf on every cut, run through the same optimizer as the app.

Materials list

  • 3 sheets of 3/4" plywood, 4×8 ft
  • 1 sheet of 1/4" plywood, 4×8 ft
  • #8 × 1-5/8" screws, about 120
  • 1-1/4" screws and glue for the top and platform laminations
  • Bolts or lag screws to fix the saw to the platform
  • Optional: doors or drawers for the cabinets (not in this cut list)

How it goes together

Each cabinet is a frameless box 23-15/16" deep (half a sheet after the kerf) and 34-9/16" tall. Add the two-layer wing top (1-7/16") and the work surface is at 36". The bottom, fixed shelf, kick and front and back top stretchers sit between the sides at 30" − 1-7/16" = 28-9/16".

The saw platform is two glued layers of 3/4" plywood, 36" long to span the bay between the cabinets. It rests on a 3"-tall cleat screwed to each cabinet side. Position the cleats so the platform top sits at 36" minus your saw's table height. Measure from the saw base to the table surface; on most 10" and 12" saws it is a few inches.

The wing tops are 24-3/16" deep so they finish flush with the 1/4" backs. Add a fence along the back of the wings if you want stop blocks.

Build order

  1. Cut all cabinet parts at 23-15/16" deep and the wing tops at 24-3/16".
  2. Build both cabinets: sides, bottom on the kick, fixed shelf, top stretchers, then the back.
  3. Set the cabinets 36" apart, level them, and screw them to the wall or to each other through a rear rail.
  4. Mount your saw on the platform, measure its table height, then screw the cleats at the right height and drop the platform in.
  5. Laminate and fit the wing tops, checking that they are flush with the saw table using a straightedge across the bay.

FAQ

How much plywood do I need for a miter saw station?

This 8-foot station takes the 3/4" sheet count in the layout above, plus one 1/4" sheet for the two cabinet backs. Doors and drawers are not included. Add them in the optimizer if you want closed storage.

How do I get the wings level with the saw table?

Mount the saw on the platform first and measure from the platform surface to the saw table. Set the cleats so the platform top is that distance below 36". Then fine-tune with shims under the saw until a straightedge across the wings just touches the saw table.

Why do the sizes subtract 1-7/16" instead of 1-1/2"?

Plywood sold as 3/4" actually measures 23/32" (about 0.72"). Two sides are 1-7/16" thick, not 1-1/2", so every part that fits between two sides is cut 1-7/16" shorter than the outside width. Measure your own sheet with calipers before cutting: if it is a true 3/4", subtract 1-1/2" instead and re-run the list in the optimizer.

What saw kerf does the layout assume?

A 1/8" kerf on every cut, which is a standard full-kerf table saw or track saw blade. With a thin-kerf blade the parts still fit; you just get slightly bigger offcuts.

Change a size, add a part or use up offcuts. The optimizer re-nests it in seconds.
