optiCutter Alternatives for Sheet and Linear Cutting

Updated

optiCutter is a browser-based cutting optimizer for sheets, rolls and lengths. Its free plan allows 5 stock sizes, 20 part sizes and 500 parts per project with PDF, XLS, CSV and DXF export, and its paid plans are €9/month (Standard) and €19/month (Professional) (as of October 2026). It's one of the strongest tools in the category, so the honest reasons to look elsewhere are narrower: you want a price in dollars, a pay-per-use option, more than Standard's 100 part sizes without paying for Professional, or a desktop app.

The alternatives below all do both sheet (2D) and linear (1D) cutting unless noted. We make EZNESTING, so weigh our entry accordingly. For a straight two-way comparison, see EZNESTING vs optiCutter.

When optiCutter is already the right tool

Be clear about this before you switch. optiCutter's free plan includes DXF export and allows 20 part sizes per project, which is generous. Its paid plans add roll material, it has an API, and it has been online since at least 2019. If your jobs fit its free limits, or €9/month is fine, stay.

The cases where an alternative makes sense:

  • You want a price in US dollars, or a monthly price below €9.
  • You cut occasionally. CutOptim's pay-as-you-go packs or a cheap monthly plan you cancel between projects may cost less over a year.
  • You need more than 100 part sizes but don't want to pay €19/month for Professional.
  • You want desktop software you own. CutLogic 1D is a one-time purchase for Windows.

The alternatives, one by one

EZNESTING (our tool) runs in the browser with no signup and does sheet and linear cutting in one project. Free gives you unlimited optimizations and up to 5 part sizes and 3 stock sizes per job, with PDF, CSV, Excel and DXF export. Pro is $7.99/month or $79.99/year with no size limits. It has no API and no roll-material mode, and both matter if you need them.

CutOptim has panel, linear and wood modes. A free account includes Excel, DXF and SVG export, but allows only 3 optimizations a month. Pro is €9/month, and the pay-as-you-go packs (10 runs for €6.90, 25 for €14.90) are unusual in this category.

Cutlistor does 2D and 1D with DXF export. Its free tier is small (20 items, 3 PDF exports a day, no saving), and Pro is $12/month or $99/year.

CutWize covers linear, sheet and roll cutting. The free Lite plan has no PDF or CSV export, and DXF isn't offered at all. The DIY plan is $50/year, one of the lowest annual prices around.

Cutlist Evolution allows 40 parts free with unlimited stock. DXF, SVG and PTX (beam saw) export come with its Expert plan.

CutLogic 1D is a Windows desktop app for linear cutting only. The free Community edition handles up to 250 parts and 10 part sizes per plan. Professional is $799 one-time. There's no Mac version.

Worked example: steel tube cut from 6 m lengths

The calculator at the top of this page is pre-filled with a linear job: 46 pieces of steel tube in four lengths (8 × 1850 mm, 12 × 940 mm, 16 × 620 mm, 10 × 300 mm), cut from 6 m stock with a 2 mm kerf.

EZNESTING packs it into 7 lengths at 92.9% yield. The 300 mm pieces fill the ends of the long bars, and the last bar has 2,306 mm left over as a usable offcut. Put the same list into optiCutter's free tier (it fits inside the 20-part-size limit) and compare the bar count. Use whichever gives the better plan for your saw.
