What is Linear Materials Mode?
EZNESTING's Linear Materials Mode optimizes cuts for one-dimensional stock—materials where only length matters. Think lumber, trim, molding, pipes, rebar, or any material you buy in standard lengths and cut down to size.
Enter your stock lengths and the pieces you need. The optimizer calculates exactly how to cut them with minimum waste and fewest stock pieces.
No more guessing. No more buying extra "just in case." Just optimized cuts in seconds.
How It Works
1. Enter Your Stock Add the lengths you have available (8-foot 2x4s, 12-foot trim, etc.) and quantities.
2. Add Your Pieces List every piece you need to cut with its length and quantity.
3. Click Optimize The algorithm finds the best arrangement to minimize waste and stock usage.
4. Follow the Diagrams Visual bar diagrams show exactly where to make each cut on every piece of stock.
That's it. From cut list to cutting diagram in seconds.
Perfect For
Lumber & Dimensional Stock - 2x4, 2x6, 2x8 studs and framing - 1x boards for shelving and trim - Any dimensional lumber project
Trim & Molding - Base trim and baseboards - Crown molding - Window and door casing - Chair rail and wainscoting
Other Linear Materials - Metal tubing and pipes - PVC and conduit - Rebar and steel bar - Aluminum extrusions
Key Features
Smart Optimization Uses proven bin packing algorithms to minimize waste. Longest pieces get placed first for maximum efficiency.
Visual Cut Diagrams Horizontal bar diagrams show each stock piece with color-coded cuts. See exactly where to cut at a glance.
Kerf Compensation Accounts for blade thickness on every cut. Your pieces come out the right size, every time.
Leftover Tracking See exactly how much usable material remains on each stock. Save leftovers for future projects.
Utilization Stats Track stocks used, total cuts, average utilization, and total leftover—know your efficiency instantly.
Works with Any Unit Inches, feet, millimeters, meters—even fractional inches like 24 1/2". Enter dimensions however you work.
Linear Mode vs Sheet Mode
| Linear Mode | Sheet Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| **Materials** | Lumber, trim, pipes | Plywood, MDF, panels |
| **Dimensions** | Length only | Width × Length |
| **Algorithm** | 1D bin packing | 2D nesting |
| **Output** | Bar diagrams | 2D cutting layouts |
| **Best for** | Framing, trim work | Cabinets, furniture |
Use Linear Mode when you're cutting lengths from stock. Use Sheet Mode when you're cutting rectangles from panels.
Quick Example
The Project: Building deck railings
Stock Available: - 10 pieces of 8-foot (96") 2x4
Pieces Needed: - 24 balusters at 36" - 8 rails at 72" - 4 posts at 42"
The Problem: How many 2x4s do you actually need? Where do you cut each one?
The Solution: Enter the numbers into EZNESTING's linear optimizer. In seconds, you'll see: - Exactly which pieces to cut from each 2x4 - Visual diagrams for every stock piece - Total utilization percentage - Leftover lengths you can use elsewhere
No spreadsheets. No scrap paper. No wasted lumber.
